As a Laborer, you will assist in weighing samples record weights, and perform special tests as required (i.e. gravity, internal, fry color determination, bruise). You may also operate equipment such as lift-truck, conveyors, panel view, and/or other equipment.

The Laborer, position is Temporary with on approximately end date of October 31, 2021, located in Hermiston OR. this is a classified represented position with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

At Oregon Department of Agriculture( ODA ), we ensure healthy natural resources, environment, and economy for Oregonians now and in the future through inspection and certification, regulation, and promotion of agriculture and food. As a member of the ODA team, you will help provides an accurate, unbiased inspection of fruits and vegetables, phytosanitary certification, shipping point inspection, third party grading of raw product for processing and export certification and licenses-controlled atmosphere storage facilities for factors affecting the marketability and export of fresh and processed fruits, vegetables and nuts for the fresh and processing industry and consuming public.

Working conditions

  • Frequently exposed to warm and cold temperatures and wet, noisy work environment.
  • Workstation might be in close proximity to machinery and equipment and other potentially hazardous equipment.
  • May be required to lift heavy objects, up to a maximum of approximately 50 pounds
  • Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking.
  • Position may include unusual or extended work ranging from 2 to 14 hours per day, up to seven days a week.

The Position:
The Contra Costa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office is seeking an enthusiastic professional who desires an exciting career opportunity as a Deputy Agricultural Commissioner. The chosen candidate will work under the direction of the Assistant Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures. Job duties will include the supervision of agricultural enforcement programs through the County. There are three Deputy Agricultural Commissioners and one Deputy Sealer allocated to the department.

In addition to the base salary, the County offers an excellent benefits plan which includes a county contribution to health insurance, dental and vision insurance plans. Other benefits also offered by the County include:
  • 94 hours paid annual Management Administrative Leave
  • $625 Professional Development Reimbursement for each two year period
  • $275 Safety shoe reimbursement for each two year period
  • $85 per month to each eligible employee who participates in the County’s Deferred Compensation Plan
  • $150 per month to an employee’s account in the Contra Costa County Deferred Compensation Plan for permanent employees hired after January 1, 2011 who meet specific criteria

The Department:
The Agricultural Commissioner’s Office consists of 44 employees and has a budget of $7,063,000 (FY 20-21). The Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture under the direction of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Department of Pesticide Regulation, and Division of Measurement Standards, is responsible for conducting regulatory and service activities pertaining to the agricultural industry and the consumers of our county. The primary purpose and objective of this office is the promotion and protection of the county’s agricultural industry, environment, and citizens. The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of pest exclusion programs, along with other agricultural enforcement programs, including knowledge of state, federal and county laws governing the regulation of agricultural commodities, and knowledge of state and local pest quarantine. Additionally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership abilities in supervising and managing staff, possess excellent public speaking skills, and demonstrate strong communication skills supporting inter-agency relations.

  • Providing information to and interacting with the public on agriculture related problems falling within the scope of the Agricultural Commissioner’s office
  • Presenting cases as the county advocate in administrative hearings, and acting as administrative law hearing officer in civil cases
