The ACLU leverages the resources of outside contractors to supplement the talents of its own staff and maximize its impact.  To protect its tax-exempt status and its fundraising, advocacy, and litigation capabilities, the ACLU must maintain rigorous compliance with a myriad of federal, state, and local laws and regulations.  The Office of Corporate Counsel provides the primary support for both of those efforts. We draft and negotiate contracts that vastly expand the organization’s reach and support the functions of every department. We create compliance programs, train staff, and provide compliance advice, all with the goal of maintaining the highest standards of professional and business conduct.

Reporting to the Co-Chief Corporate Counsel, the Associate Corporate Counsel will be responsible for assisting the ACLU Corporate Counsel primarily responsible for software and technology contracting, data use, privacy, and security regulatory compliance, and for addressing other transactional and compliance matters as needed in the Office of Corporate Counsel more generally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts, with a particular focus on software and technology agreements
  • Work with and support Corporate Counsel with primary responsibility in advising senior leadership and other clients with respect to all legal aspects of technology, data use, privacy and security, including contracting, regulatory compliance, breach preparedness, and standards development

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admitted to practice in New York State
  • A minimum of two years practicing corporate law in a U.S. law firm or in-house law department
  • Experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, including, specifically, software and technology contracts, Data Processing Agreements (“DPAs”), and/or data sharing agreements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication, verbal and writing skills
  • Excellent legal research and legal briefing skills
  • Ability to handle confidential organizational matters
  • Excellent time management skills; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and manage multiple projects simultaneously, often under strict deadlines, is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in analyzing new data privacy (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA), security, and/or consumer protection laws, and advising on or directly developing and updating data privacy and data governance standards for compliance purposes
  • Experience advising organizations with integrated, multi-entity affiliate networks
  • Experience with laws applicable to the nonprofit sector

COMPENSATION

ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Controller in the Finance Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.

The Finance team manages the financial activities of the National ACLU and is responsible for safeguarding the financial resources of the organization.  From paying vendors to forecasting budgets, and everything in-between, we take pride in providing the resources and platform for informed financial decision-making.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is a part of the Finance department’s senior leadership team and is responsible for the organization’s accounting operationsAdditionally accountable to the Chief Financial Officer and ACLU senior leadership, the Controller is a key figure in the execution of the organization’s financial strategy. Managing a staff of 12, the Controller oversees the accounting, reporting and financial compliance of an organization with over $350 million in annual operating and capital budgets and nearly $1 billion in investments. 

Our ideal candidate is a highly experienced leader with a deep background in management and knowledge of GAAP, with the ability to successfully oversee multiple priorities with competing timelines for a complex operation. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership:

  • Lead and manage a diverse team of finance professionals to drive results through the use of data, direct feedback and strong accountability in a supportive and learning environment that fosters high staff engagementprofessional growth, and responsive delivery 
  • Serve as a member of the Finance senior leadership team, providing guidance to finance and organizational leaders on accounting policies and procedures to support strategic and operational decisionmaking 
  • Create and deliver trainings on accounting related topics for accounting and organizational staff
  • Complete ad hoc projects as directed by the Chief Financial Officer or Senior Leadership of the organization 
  • Prepare Chief Financial Officer for reports and accountabilities to the National Board; provide subject matter expertise before committees of the National Board as needed

Day-to-Day Operations:

  • Oversee organizational accounting operations including A/P, revenue & A/R, fixed assets, investment accounting, pension accounting, payroll, travel management and relevant systems
  • Provide technical solutions that facilitate compliance and ease-of-use including evaluation and/or design and implementation of systems training to accounting and other staff
  • Deliver excellent customer service through timely, thorough and helpful responses to inquiries
  • Act as secondary administrator managing general ledger chart of accounts and month-close tasks and deadlines, and coordinating with internal staff, vendors, and technical consultants on feature development and critical issues
  • Produce and monitor reports on team metrics to evaluate transaction volume, team performance and customer service effectiveness

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Direct annual audits, coordinate scheduling for field work and meetings, prepare and review audit materials and schedules, manage deliverable deadlines
  • Prepare tax and regulatory filings, ensuring accuracy, internal review and timely submission
  • Develop, implement and maintain accounting and related financial policies, processes and control systems ensuring compliance with GAAP, the Internal Revenue Code, FASB, other applicable federal, state and local laws, donor restrictions and best practices.
  • Perform periodic internal audits of accounting transactions and procedures to ensure quality control over financial data and alignment with relevant fiscal policies.
  • Prepare financial reports and analyses for senior leaders and external stakeholders to support decision-making and compliance

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant demonstrated relevant work experience, previous experience as a Controller leading diverse teams is required; 15+ years of relevant work experience and experience with non-profit organizations is strongly preferred
  • CPA with extensive knowledge of GAAP and current accounting best practices, including upcoming regulatory changes to reporting requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software; aptitude for learning new financial technology
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office products required, with advanced skills in Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP’s, if statements)
  • Experience successfully managing teams in large, complex organizations
  • Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with demonstrated ability to create structures to effectively manage personal and team deliverables
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write in succinct, informative manner such that content, expectations and timelines are clearly understood by audience
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities from a variety of sources; prioritizing effectively to impact areas of greatest need and meet deadlines

ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Campaign Strategist in the National Political Advocacy Department, based in the ACLU’s National offices in either Washington, D.C. or New York City.

The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) works to strengthen the efforts of the ACLU at the federal, state, and local levels of government. The department harnesses the political power that comes from having more than eleven million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. Through issue campaigns buttressed by grassroots organizing, direct lobbying, leveraging earned and paid media and other modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to achieve significant policy and political change in the legislative, administrative and electoral arenas.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of the Liberty Division, the Campaign Strategist will work with national staff and ACLU affiliates to design, build, and execute campaigns directed at advancing civil liberties and civil rights by reaching specific political/policy outcomes. The Campaign Strategist will help drive programmatic work related to reproductive freedom and gender and economic justice. In the near term, the Campaign Strategist will play a key role in helping to define and implement a proactive programming agenda to match current challenges in the federal courts, including the Supreme Court’s looming decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to varied aspects of campaign planning and execution
  • Help develop campaign goals, plans, strategies, and tactics to achieve outcomes on specific issue areas, in conjunction with Director-level staff or a Senior Campaign Strategist; may contribute to developing and managing campaign budgets
  • Engage in legislative campaigns, electoral campaigns, administrative campaigns, and/or corporate campaigns
  • Utilize a wide variety of campaign tactics and tools
  • In conjunction with Director-level staff or a Senior Campaign Strategist, successfully employ constituent and/or voter targeting, developing advertisements (TV, radio, print), polling, and developing creative campaign tactics for earned media or other purposes · In conjunction with Director-level staff or a Senior Campaign Strategist, retain and manage consultants
  • Work closely with the organizing division on developing field plans for relevant campaigns
  • Work in coordination with other stakeholders, affiliate staff, and national staff, including policy staff within the political advocacy department
  • Develop strategic partnerships that expand the ACLU’s influence in ways the ACLU would otherwise not have operating alone
  • Help facilitate on-the-ground meetings, planning, and campaign events in priority jurisdictions, as needed
  • Exercise independent judgment to solve problems and determine creative solutions
