Job Summary

Dominion Metering Engineering and Planning is seeking an experienced Engineer for our Richmond, Virginia location. This role will contribute to the evaluation and implementation of electric meters, supporting metering software, and ancillary metering products such as instrument transformers, test equipment, communication devices, and meter enclosures.

There is one position which will be filled at the Engineer I or Engineer II level, commensurate with the selected candidate’s skills and abilities.  At the time of application, candidates must indicate at which level they want to be considered, e.g. Engineer I, Engineer II or both Engineer I and II.

This role requires prior experience or the ability to apply basic engineering theories and concepts with electric meters, metering software, instrument transformers, and various metering products. This role will help analyze meter data to support other departments such as Field Operations, AMI Technology, System Metering, Billing, Rates, and DVI. Specific details and responsibilities include:

•    Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices. Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills.
•    Electric distribution experience preferred as well as IT skills to interact with databases and deploy metering software as required
•    Electrical Engineering with Power Systems experience is strongly desired.
•    Performs and/or reviews engineering calculations, analysis, research and design. Provides cost analysis as needed and develops recommendation based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade) for management review.
•    Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing) and effective decision making skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to work during Storm Duty as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:

For Engineer I Position:   0-2 years of relevant engineering experience is required.
For Engineer II Position:  3-4 years of relevant metering engineering experience is required.

(Note:  A Master’s degree can count towards one year of experience)

Additional qualifications include the following:

•    Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
•    Knowledge of ANSI C12.1 for electric metering
•    Understanding of in-service meter testing programs preferred (i.e. Statistical Sampling, Periodic testing, etc.)
•    Understanding of meter obligations to regulatory agencies preferred
•    Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
•    Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
•    Planning, organizational and project management skills.
•    Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
•    Effective decision making skills.
•    Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

  • Training consists of: station orientation, chemical sampling procedures, gas and water testing methods, and identification and review of periodic test.
  • Will also learn basic chemistry fundamentals, appropriate use of human performance tools and basic laboratory practices such as pH, conductivity and balance operation.
