Can you explain NFTs? Sure. Can you sniff out vaporware? Absolutely. And finally, are you interested in leading a team of talented reporters that help readers navigate their digital lives? Perfect, we have a job for you.

Mashable is looking for its next great Tech Editor to shape our coverage and stand out as an authority amongst competitors. Moreover, they should be constantly thinking about the bigger picture: How the digital world shapes both society and individual lives.

Tech is a pillar of Mashable editorial coverage, so this role requires the ability to collaborate with leadership across all parts of the organization. This person must operate with flexibility and consideration to achieve goals established in collaboration with leadership.

Our dream editor will be comfortable working closely with Mashable’s Culture section and writers of varying levels of experience to ensure quality and originality. They will themselves be an excellent writer who leads by example and is passionate about storytelling. In fact, this individual will jump at the chance to churn out a post if they have the time.

In your cover letter, please include a concise 2-3 sentence vision for the future of Mashable’s tech coverage.

The ideal candidate is…

  • A detail-oriented editor who knows how to get the best out of writers and can quickly turn around clean copy.
  • A tech expert who is fascinated by current events, the internet, and pop culture.
  • An experienced manager who leads with empathy and enthusiasm.
  • Naturally skeptical about the role technology plays in our lives.
  • Well-versed in a variety of social media platforms, including Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.
  • Someone who understands SEO and why it’s so important.
  • An excellent writer who understands the ins and outs of technology and isn’t afraid to have fun in their stories.
  • Willing to work across content teams (including Art and Video) to create a cohesive Mashable Tech POV
  • Able to differentiate between what needs to be a news hit, an hour-two story, a feature, or a skip

The Day to Day

  • Determine the daily coverage priorities and long-term strategy for Mashable’s Tech vertical
  • Assign and edit stories from writers across different time zones
  • Manage and communicate thoughtfully with a team of writers and editors
  • Plan and execute series and theme weeks
  • Encourage writers to pursue scoops, exclusives, and ambitious storytelling
  • Work closely with the Culture editor to ensure our coverage focuses on the intersection of technology and digital culture
  • Track metrics to inform strategy

Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience writing and editing at a publication or in a digital media environment.
  • At minimum 5 years experience covering technology; space and science experience is a bonus
  • Experience with Google Analytics, Chartbeat, or other metric tools
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Thoughtful communication skills
  • A critical eye for strong editing
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable managing sensitive topic areas
  • A self-starter as well as a team player (a sense of humor is a must!)
  • Deep knowledge of the digital space and Mashable’s core coverage areas

We have great benefits!

  • Company-sponsored medical, dental, and vision insurance (including domestic partner coverage) + pet insurance

  • We work on large scale challenges with a variety of technologies
  • We have a great open vacation policy, volunteer time off policy, parental leave benefits, and healthcare
  • We believe in giving prizes, bonuses, and recognition for doing what you love
