Major Gifts Officer

New York Public Radio, home to WNYC, WQXR, WNYC Studios, and The Jerome L. Greene Space, is seeking a Major Gifts Officer.

The Major Gifts Officer is a front-line fundraiser on the New York Public Radio (NYPR) Major Gifts team. This is a team in growth mode, as NYPR continues to expand its funding base with donors giving $5K and above.  The Officer will report to the Director of Major Gifts and will work in partnership with the Chief Development Officer, Director of Major Gifts, and other senior staff and board members to build and maintain relationships with donors and prospects who are capable of making annual gifts of $5,000 and more, as well as larger multi-year commitments.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute fundraising and stewardship strategies for a portfolio of approximately 150 individual donors for annual gifts of $5,000 and more, as well as 5-6 figure and multi-year commitments.
  • Lead the development of long- and short-term plans to meet assigned revenue goals for general operating, special project and campaign funding priorities.
  • Oversee the tracking of moves management for major gift donors and prospects within the MGO’s portfolio, with the goal of increased and new giving.
  • Work with designated board members to develop personalized solicitation and stewardship touch points.
  • Develop and oversee the planning and execution of one-on-one meetings, station tours, luncheons, dinners, and other small gatherings with the goal of creating targeted cultivation and stewardship opportunities.
  • Work with the Major Gifts team to develop innovative stewardship and communication strategies.
  • Assist in the development of research strategies and targeted areas for research, working closely with the Major Gifts team and the Manager, Research.
  • Establish strong relationships and lines of communication with programming staff, working together to create accurate and informative messaging, increased donor awareness of key initiatives and engaging donor cultivation events.

Job requirements:

  • At least 5 years years of front-line fundraising experience, preferably managing an active portfolio of individual donors
  • Proven track record of securing gifts of $5,000 and above
  • Experience managing budgets and meeting revenue goals
  • Experience working with board members and coordinating volunteer-led fundraising activities
  • Active knowledge of NY philanthropic and cultural communities
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proficient experience with fundraising databases
  • Self-starter with ability to get up to speed quickly and work independently
  • Highly motivated, organized, flexible, and proactive
  • Strong time and project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written
  • Ability to work and collaborate with colleagues within and across departments

Responsibilities

  • Manage all accounting functions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, treasury, general ledger and revenue recognition
  • Lead the timely and accurate monthly, quarterly and annual general ledger closing process to include verifying accuracy and appropriateness of accounting entries, preparation, review and analysis of balance sheet reconciliations
  • Maintain capital asset and depreciation schedules
  • Motivate and lead finance team members by clarifying roles and providing helpful feedback
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly departmental financial reports
  • Partner with financial planning group in the preparation and monitoring of effective budgeting and forecasting
  • Liaising with business units to ensure accuracy in data and transactions
  • Perform treasury management and monitoring activities including preparation of cash transfers
  • Manage the preparation of required documentation for internal and external auditors
  • Manage and comply with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Monitor and development operational procedures and documentation of internal controls and policies to strengthen best practices
  • Oversee the bi-weekly payroll process and related
  • Suggest updates and improvements for accounting systems
  • Create and implement new systems to streamline and improve processes

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Accounting
  • CPA certification preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in financial management
  • Non-Profit experience and media industry experience is a plus
  • Excellent technical computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Effective in managing staff
  • Previous accounting controller or related experience
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • This position requires honesty; integrity; reliability; high attention to detail; critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This is a full-time role that includes benefits. New York Public Radio offers competitive compensation with excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, and generous time off benefits including vacation, personal and sick time and parental leave.

This role is currently operating remotely, with the ability to optionally work from the office/studio sometimes, which is encouraged. However, this position is not a permanent remote position and is part of the New York City staff and may be expected to work from the New York office in a hybrid capacity within the next few months.

Given this role will be on-site all or some of the time, being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required unless NYPR has approved a specific religious or medical exemption in advance of the first day of work. At this time, NYPR defines being fully vaccinated as having received two Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations or one Johnson and Johnson vaccination.
