The Splunk Observability Suite is a new generation of cloud applications for microservices and distributed applications. We work on new, world-class tools to monitor and observe microservice-based applications. Site Reliability Engineers at Splunk are hybrid Software/Systems Engineers whose overarching goal is to ensure that production services are always up and running reliably.

As a Principal Site Reliability Engineer, you will help us run one of the largest and most sophisticated cloud-scale, big data systems in the world. You will be responsible for improving operational efficiency, optimal utilization and system resiliency for a real-time streaming analytics platform. You are passionate about automation, infrastructure-as-code, and getting rid of tedious, manual tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for automating & operationalizing cloud provider infrastructure via Terraform, Kubernetes, Helm and Istio
  • Monitor capacity & utilization and work closely with the infrastructure team to orchestrate scale-up/down of backend services.
  • Own & operate critical back-end open-source services like Cassandra, Kafka, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, and Zookeeper.
  • Build tools and design processes that help improve observability and system resiliency.
  • Triage site availability incidents and proactively work towards reducing MTTR for customer-impacting incidents.
  • Implement service level metrics & service level objectives that act as service-level health indicators.
  • Establish design patterns for monitoring, benchmarking and deploying new features for the backend services.

Requirements

  • Strong coding experience in one or more of Python, Go or Java.
  • Infrastructure as code experience within one or more of Terraform, Ansible, Puppet or Salt.
  • Strong experience with modern application development workflows and version control systems like GitHub, Gitlab or Bitbucket
  • Strong working knowledge of Docker containers and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP and/or Azure)
  • Strong working knowledge of orchestration engines and package management including Kubernetes, Helm, and Istio
  • Experience operating one or more OSS technologies like Kafka, Cassandra, Zookeeper; other backends and streaming systems a plus
  • Extensive understanding of Unix/Linux systems from kernel to shell and beyond (system libraries, file systems, and client-server protocols).
  • 10+ years of experience as a Site Reliability Engineer, Production Engineer or Backend Software Engineer for web-scale or similar platforms.
  • BS degrees in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

As a Senior Product Manager for Search, within the IT Engineering group, you will be responsible for defining the vision and roadmap for Enterprise search utilized by external Splunk Customers and internal Splunkers. You will deeply understand and triangulate across customer needs, product analytics, and external industry innovation to offer best-in-class search experience to our end users. You will work with domain specialists and engineers to improve and deliver a personalized and relevant search experience on multiple, global, applications.What you’ll do: Yeah, I want to and can do that.

  • Drive product vision and strategy for enterprise search capabilities to continuously improve result relevancy and ranking
  • Develop product roadmaps that inform our engineering teams of the problems that need to be solved. Partner closely with our engineering teams on the execution of product strategy and roadmaps
  • Create strong partnerships with business stakeholders creating continuous feedback loops that allow us to better understand their problems
  • Articulate our search platform strategy, rollout and migrations plans informed by an evaluation of vendor solutions.
  • Actively network with key industry contacts to understand standard methodologies and emerging practices and how they can be used within the company
  • Work closely with design teams to deliver compelling search experiences that are personalized, contextual, relevant, and intent based.
  • Define and standardize Key Performance Indicators that will help aid in the decision-making process and showcase results
  • Drive A/B testing to experiment with various search strategies and identify launch candidates that improve product metrics and outcomes
  • Extensive experience working with engineering teams as a Product Owner to develop products using an Agile delivery methodology, specifically Scrum or Kanban
  • Product backlog prioritization responsibility to ensure the highest business value is being delivered.
  • Independently author technical feature requirements in the form of user stories and acceptance criteria for varying business scenarios
  • Ensure that our product evolution thoughtfully addresses product adoption/migration experience
  • Build strong relationships internally and externally; present roadmaps, sophisticated ideas and features to broad teams in an effective manner

Requirements: I’ve already done that or have that!

  • 7+ years of experience as a product manager
  • 3+ years experience product managing search technologies (Lucidworks Fusion and/or open source search engines like Solr Lucene or Elasticsearch).
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of bigger and smaller bets while balancing short-term goals and long-term vision
  • Comfortable applying a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to define success and problem solving without perfect metrics
  • Knowledge of computer science fundamentals (e.g., data structures, algorithms, design patterns) and basic knowledge of search results algorithms for promotion, faceted searches, boosting query, and filter queries.
  • Willingness to be on a constant learning journey and continuously go above and beyond the comfort zone.
  • Good balance of IQ & EQ to be able to solve both technical and social challenges
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; timely communication with clear expectations. An active listener and clear communicator; can lead by influence.

Preferred knowledge and experience: These are a huge plus.

  • Hold a current Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification preferred
  • Experience operating with a geographically dispersed workforce

Splunk User Behavior Analytics (UBA) is Splunk’s market leading analytics solution that detects known and unknown security threats at tera-byte scale from a customer’s machine data.
