UCS is seeking a director for the Clean Transportation Program to lead a talented, dynamic team working to transform the way we move people and goods in this country by channeling four key strengths, cutting edge research, strategic policy advocacy, strong partnerships, and the ability to organize scientists and experts on our issues. The Clean Transportation Program works to create a clean, equitable transportation system that improves personal mobility, supports healthy communities, decreases global warming and air pollution, and reduces oil use in transportation. Our team of 22 engineers, scientists, advocates, and campaign specialists collaborate to build impactful campaigns to advance our clean transportation and equitable mobility goals.

The Director is responsible for the vision, strategy, and overall management & functioning of the program; representing and raising the visibility of UCS on transportation issues in key public, scientific, non-governmental, media and government/policy fora; serving as a lead spokesperson and thought leader promoting a clean, equitable transportation system; coordinating with other UCS leaders to leverage key programmatic issues at UCS; establishing and maintaining effective partnerships with other NGOs, grassroots groups, and science organizations; and ensuring the scientific accuracy and advocacy impact of CT programming and activities.

As a member of UCS’s senior leadership team, the Clean Transportation Program Director is an ‘institutional citizen’ who contributes to setting and shaping organization-wide policies and practices. In this role, the Director will source and share best practices with and from other UCS programs and departments, and proactively seek opportunities to scale and deepen impact through efforts that join forces with other UCS programs, departments, and external partners.

Requirements

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will: have an advanced degree in science, engineering or public policy and 15 years of professional accomplishments that will make the Director a credible spokesperson and representative for UCS on transportation issues with expert, policy, and public constituencies and the media.

The candidate should have a working knowledge of transportation policy and technology as well as a strong understanding of the current and historic systemic inequities in the sector. Knowledge of state and federal policy and legislative processes, as well as knowledge of issue campaign development, public outreach, and media relations is required. Strong and demonstrated management skills are essential, as is the ability to manage technical, outreach, and advocacy staff. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required, including: a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and credibly with public audiences, policymakers, leading scientists and other experts; and an ability to effectively build and manage cross-disciplinary teams on tight deadlines in the service of achieving science-based policy or public engagement objectives. Fundraising experience and ability is very important.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is seeking a new Washington Representative II for the Center for Science and Democracy (CSD). The Center campaigns for strong, independent science as a fundamental basis for better, more equitable and just public policies. We work for fairer, more transparent democratic institutions and systems; more just and equitable public health, safety, and environmental protections, particularly for underserved communities; and an ongoing cultural shift in the scientific community to embrace activism for science-based policymaking.

Under the supervision of the Policy Director of the Center for Science and Democracy (CSD) or their designee, the Washington Representative II will develop and lead advocacy efforts to strengthen the role of science in public policymaking and defend against proposals or actions that would undermine our system of science-based public protections. Advocate for CSD policy agenda to Congress, the Executive Branch, and other relevant government officials, including in support of activities undertaken by senior program staff, the UCS FACT Campaign, and UCS leadership.

The Washington Representative II will work closely with outreach staff, senior program leadership, and other UCS government affairs to develop and integrate legislative work with research and outreach strategies and keep staff up to date on relevant legislative, administrative, and coalition developments. Work with other organizations on coordinated advocacy and policy development. Prepare written materials for diverse audiences, including internal managers and staff, Members of Congress and their staff, administration officials, partner organizations, and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and assist in the day to day running of the Coalition for the Prevention of Chemicals Disasters (CPCD).
  • Represent CSD and UCS at meetings with government officials and other external stakeholders.
  • Support advocacy efforts related to CSD’s policy agenda and maintain a leading role on specific policy areas as assigned.
  • Monitor and develop systems for monitoring daily print media, blogs, and social media for pertinent coverage of policy issues and share promptly with relevant staff.
  • Track the progress of legislation and regulations in Congress and at federal agencies, respectively.
  • Help develop and implement campaign strategies for CSD, cross-programmatic, and coalition policy goals.
  • Provide strategic and innovative input on advancing CSD’s priorities in Congress and with the executive branch, as well as defending against policies and actions that undermine the use of science in federal policymaking.
  • Provide support of program efforts to encourage administrative actions and Congressional oversight over program issues.
  • Participate in research projects related to legislative and policy work, including helping with the drafting and editing of reports.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of relevant issues, as assigned.

Position requires:

  • Knowledge of science or technical policy issues
  • Must have a substantive knowledge of legislative process, including advocacy/lobbying

The position requires five to seven years’ experience including three years of comparable in legislative, campaign, and lobbying work at the national, state, or grassroots level. Proven advocacy and communication skills and experience working either in Congress, in government implementing programs and policies, or for NGOs working to engage stakeholders and influence decision-making is necessary. Capitol Hill experience is a plus.

Our fundraising department seeks a Senior Planned Giving Officer to join our successful team. Our job is to help donors make legacy gifts—i.e., donations through wills, trusts, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and other complex and deferred gift designations. The ideal candidate will have experience forging relationships with donors or clients, can leverage estate and financial planning strategies to assist donors in developing meaningful legacy gifts, and can help our team achieve ambitious revenue and activity goals.   • Regularly engage with donors through a variety of communication channels and develop donor engagement strategies, including frequent program updates, events featuring UCS leaders and program staff, and in-person visits when possible and when it’s safe to do so
  • Respond to a wide variety of donor inquiries generated by marketing and outreach efforts, qualifying and cultivating prospects for gift discussions and solicitations
  • Help mentor the Planned Giving Coordinator in their development of donor cultivation and solicitation skills and technical planned giving knowledge
  • Provide technical gift planning expertise and strategy guidance to Major Gift Officers and other development staff
  • Remain versed and up to date on planned giving tools being offered by UCS and in the field at large, and stay abreast of changes affecting the industry
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with all UCS program areas and priorities
  • Upholds professional ethical standards of fundraising, as per Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethics
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with a diverse team of people and be open to engaging in anti-racism work that may fall outside of the scope of your direct responsibilities (UCS provides time and compensation for some such work.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Five to seven years of planned giving or relevant fundraising experience, including direct donor or client contact; strategic relationship building; gift, estate, or financial planning; familiarity with fundraising ethics and best practices; and ease working with large amounts of data and program information
  • Ability to explain for donors the complicated concepts and issues associated with the wide range of available planned giving options
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Strong planning skills, including the ability to anticipate tasks, set priorities, manage multiple

complex projects, meet deadlines, and function smoothly under strict deadlines and shifting priorities—with a thorough attention to detail and follow-through

  • Some weekday evenings, weekends, and travel required (as much as 20% on average, as conditions allow)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required and experience with constituent databases and gift planning software (e.g. Raiser’s Edge and PG Calc) are a plus
  • Qualified candidate must possess the ability to develop and maintain updated a proficiency in current tax law pertaining to charitable giving, as well as estate planning and financial planning tools

The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

Our fundraising department is seeking an Administrative and Events Associate to provide support to our Major Gifts and Donor Events teams. The seven-person Major Gifts team manages a portfolio of about 400 individuals and family foundations, while the four-person Engagement & Events team is responsible for donor engagement opportunities for the entire fundraising department. The ideal candidate is detail-focused, willing to learn and ask questions, and able to prioritize competing demands from two teams.

Responsibilities

Under the joint direction of the Major Gifts Operations Manager and the Associate Director of Donor Engagement and Events, the Development Associate is responsible for providing administrative support to both teams. Primary responsibilities for this role include data entry and management, team administration, and event coordination, specifically:

  • Working in our Raiser’s Edge database to enter data, maintain accurate donor records, and support officers with high- volume data entry needs
  • Maintaining a calendar of activities, events, reports, and proposals
  • Preparing supplementary materials for proposals and reports to family foundations
  • Assisting with donor research
  • Coordinating event activities including managing registration pages, maintaining invitation lists, and ensuring event data is entered and constituent records are updated in the database
  • Managing daily operations for both teams, including cross-team communications, meeting coordination, and donor list management.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • 1-3 years of administrative, event coordination, or project management experience is preferred.
  • Basic project management skills and database experience are a plus
  • Experience manipulating data sets in Excel is highly desired. A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required
  • Ability to pay attention to detail while managing multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to engage in discussion around diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment to advancing these issues at UCS is also highly valued
  • May spend extended periods at computer
