Full Job Description

Position Summary:
The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is seeking two exceptional candidates to join their Marine Operations team to support oceanographic research around Alaska and beyond. The IT Systems Analyst is responsible for managing cyberinfrastructure on the R/V Sikuliaq, which is the only global-class ice-capable vessel in the US academic research fleet. They will administer both shipside and shoreside servers, troubleshoot IT issues, engage in cybersecurity best practices, as well as develop and maintain software, data systems, and network production services. The Systems Analyst should foster fleetwide collaborations and implement network reference architecture. The majority of work can be performed remotely from shore, although the Systems Analyst will need to travel to Sikuliaq’s location several times a year to work with the ship’s crew and UAF technical staff on equipment maintenance, that may include upgrades and new installations, as well as provide operational support for visiting scientists.

Duties:
Cybersecurity Advance Sikuliaq’s Cybersecurity Risk Management Plan toward a stable and mature level of policies and processes.Projects, Development, Documentation, and Training When not assigned to cruise support duties, these positions will work on moderate to large scope projects as assigned. These activities would include DevOps programming, or other IT, science support, or operations support type programming and development projects. This also includes cross-training and documentation of those systems.Fleetwide Collaborations Collaborate with peers across UNOLS and the U.S. Academic Research Fleet. This includes participation in the Research Vessel Technical Enhancement Committee (RVTEC) and Cyberinfrastructure Working Group (CIWG).Planning / Communications Participate in meetings and report to your supervisor as needed.Onsite Support / IT Maintenance (1-3 months aboard Sikuliaq) The primary duty of the Sikuliaq IT systems analyst is to provide day-to-day IT support for Sikuliaq operations and science missions, and conduct routine maintenance on Sikuliaq cyberinfrastructure systems. The majority of this support will be provided remotely, but travel will be required to provide onsite support as Sikuliaq’s schedule permits. Travel to Fairbanks may also be required to support Sikuliaq’s shoreside servers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Knowledge/Skills:
Strong Linux Administration, Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu, Raspbian
Strong Microsoft Windows Administration experience
Strong troubleshooting skills
Strong remote command line (SSH) experience
Experience with supporting Mac OS X, Android, and Apple iOS
Experience with Cybersecurity frameworks including NIST 800, CIS Controls, CMMC 2.0 L1 & L2

Strong experience with Git revision control
Cisco CCNA or advanced experience managing LAN and WAN cyberinfrastructure hardware and operating systems.
Advanced networking experience with DNS, DHCP, Next Generation Firewalls, Complex Routing and Load Balancing, SD-WAN, managing segmented networks.
Experience with Satellite based Internet services
Database programming including MySQL, Postgres PostGIS and SQLite, and No SQL systems like PouchDB, Couch DB, Mongo DB, etc.
Experience with Enterprise Grade server hardware and software, including iSCSI SAN RAID Storage, Ceph, VMWare ESXi, Proxmox, NAS, NFS, and CIFS.
Knowledge of IMO Cybersecurity regulations
Experience with project management, teamwork and providing customer service in a team environment.
Experience with field work.

Abilities:
Travel and work aboard Sikuliaq for 1-3 months per year.
Work irregular hours and on-call rotation.
Lift up to 50 Lbs on occasion.
Pass a background check.
Must be able to obtain a U.S. Passport.
Must be able to obtain a Drivers License.
Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
Comply with UAF and Sikuliaq safety policies.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3 years work experience providing technical support and maintaining enterprise grade IT systems.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, or related technical field, and 3 years experience in IT, or equivalent training, knowledge, or experience.

SALARY INFORMATION:
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
