Full Job Description

This is a year round, paid internship position responsible for completing assigned work items in a timely manner and ensuring high quality service to business partners. The assigned work can be from different business areas and can vary in complexity and type.

General Summary

This internship is an internal market research role on our customer insights team that gleans insights from Unum’s customers: HR representatives at our customer organizations and employees using Unum’s insurance and services. Scholars will have the opportunity to be involved in all steps of the customer research process – from recruiting communications and scheduling, research execution, data analysis & compilation, to creating reports and creative deliverables that tell customer stories of their needs, pain points and experiences with Unum. Scholars will gain exposure to the market research process and build experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies through a variety of projects investigating topics such as product development, user-experience, customer segmentation, and marketing strategy.

Candidates should display solid communication and presentation skills, attention to detail, commitment to quality, superior analytical capabilities, and demonstrate initiative. The ideal candidate will have a general interest in the field of market research or marketing strategy, will be enrolled in a 4-year college or university, and able to work approximately 16-20 hours per week throughout the semester and approximately 40 hours per week in the summer. The position provides an opportunity for tremendous professional growth and exposure to market research and marketing strategy, with our most talented Scholars being given the opportunity to continue on as analysts after graduation.

Responsibilities and Highlights

• Support customer insights team on all customer research steps including research design, execution, and presentation of insights and recommendations to internal partners.
• Manage communications to customer research participants; crafting invitations, coordinating schedules, and setting up virtual research discussions using online platforms.
• Listen to customer research interviews and discussion groups; taking notes on key quotes and compiling notes for analysis and distribution.
• Organize research outputs such as recordings, transcript files, and datasets for analysis and distribution.
• Collaborate on customer insight reports and deliverables; analyzing data collected, identifying data to support key insights, and ensuring deliverables are accurate and high quality.
• Participate in an internship where your fresh, outside perspective will be valued.
• Have access to frequent networking opportunities with leadership.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in a 4-year university; coursework in marketing, statistics, psychology, or anthropology preferred.
• Must be able to work approximately 15-20 hours a week during the school year and  approximately 40 hours a week during the summer break (start and end dates negotiable).
• Available as an in-person (Portland, ME) or remote position
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word is required.
• Hard-working, detail-oriented, creative, and comfortable working with numbers.

General Summary:

This exciting role is the pricing lead for Unum’s Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) product line. The incumbent for this role will have the opportunity to work with an industry leader in the IDI business. If you have a passion for pricing this is a top placement!

The individual who will thrive in this role will have technical skills and be able to build and improve on existing models. Pricing experience is preferred and communication skills are necessary for working within your team and cross functionally with other departments. This role will have the opportunity to work with and mentor a team of actuaries early in their career. This individual will have high exposure to leadership and a strong pipeline for growth and development.
This is a senior level position that requires independent judgment, initiative and solid business knowledge. This role actively identifies, researches and analyzes a variety of actuarial issues and concepts. In this role, one will identify, plan and initiate projects and may manage a team. Considerable reliance will be placed on the individual’s judgment. This position is an active participant on a variety of other cross functional/operating teams (e.g., underwriting, compliance, customer care etc.) Minimum qualifications include at least four years of relevant experience and the designation of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Analyze emerging experience, monitor marketplace trends, and identify issues

• Develop analysis framework and recommend enhancements
• Recommend updated pricing, valuation or reserving assumptions to management
• Lead development of tools to support pricing, valuation, underwriting and business analysis and participate in implementation efforts
• Prepare financial reports and projections; perform analysis of financial data
• Participate actively on cross-functional/operational task forces (e.g. underwriting, compliance, customer care)
• Mentor, manage and train an actuarial support staff
• May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

• Bachelors degree required
• Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries
• At least four years of relevant experience and/or a high level of technical expertise
• Strong problem solving ability and project management skills
• Hands-on experience with current technology – experience with Prophet model for pricing or other tools with similar functions
• Experience with assumption setting and rate filings
• Hands-on experience with current technology
• Solid people management
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrates strong leadership abilities
