SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Advanced knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair engine, transmission, brake, suspension, electrical, hydraulic, body components and systems related to heavy duty and light duty trucks. This may include gasoline, diesel and CNG systems. May include welding and fabrication.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the A Technician will be responsible for diagnostics related to a fleet of refuse and recycling vehicles.
* Maintenance and repair of all aspects of Mack, IHC, Autocar, Heil, McNeilus vehicles and equipment.
* Support of coworkers in working safely and efficiently in the maintenance and repair of fleet of vehicles and equipment.
* Completes all required paperwork in a timely and concise manner.
* Follows all safety policies and procedures
* Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with corporate and OSHA standards.
* Utilizes vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs.
* Conducts safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
* Conducts repairs utilizing Factory Service Manuals.
* Conducts safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
* Maintain high standard of Ethics and Dependability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Ability to provide Drive Train Inspections, Diagnosis and Repair
* Ability to provide General Engine Inspection, Diagnosis and Repair
* Ability to provide Transmission Inspection, Diagnosis and Repair
* Ability to Perform Outside Repair Inspection Review
* Ability to Assess Structural Damage and assign needed repairs
* Ability to Provide assistance, guidance and direction to all shop technicians
* CDL Class B (required)
* Ability to obtain 7 ASE Certifications or equivalent within 36 months
* 3-5 years of hands on technical experience in the maintenance and repair of medium duty class 8 vehicles and equipment. Preferably with waste/recycling industry experience
* Clear understanding of OSHA safety requirements for vehicle fleets Ability to utilize computers for data tracking, communication etc. (dossier, Microsoft office).

OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Employees in this job classification must attend and participate in corporation sponsored training courses as assigned.

Summary
This is an outstanding career opportunity to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License while working for Waste Pro. While training this position is responsible for assisting the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, or recycling. During the first 4 months of employment Waste Pro will provide training to help the employee obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit. Once the employee obtains their permit, Waste Pro will provide behind the wheel instruction and testing with a State Certified Examiner. After passing test and obtaining CDL employee will be transferred to a driving position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Picks up solid waste and places it in the back of a rear load garbage truck on specified routes often done manually or by pushing toter to tipper. Lifts and carries trash bags, bulk items and containers to the truck for disposal. Climbs onto and off of the rear truck step to load refuse, waste and carts. Operates packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck.
2. Assists Driver in safely backing up the truck by directing the Driver from the ground.
3. Cleans behind the compactor blade with shovel and hoe when directed. Sprays and cleans the hopper and truck at the end of each shift or as needed.
4. Reports any safety or customer service related issues to driver and supervisor, immediately.
5. Assists other routes as needed to complete daily work.
6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
2. Provides a safe and Distinguishably Different level of service through courteous and expeditious customer service in all aspects of refuse operation to the general public and customers. Exhibits a positive attitude towards company, customer and municipal goals.
3. Ensures garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly; pick up may require using back door.
4. Answers questions for residents and directs them to contact Customer Service or appropriate government office for additional information.
5. Must comply with all ANSI (American National Standards Institute), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and company safety polices including Waste Pro Absolute Guidelines.
9. Performs a variety of manual duties in the clean-up of scattered refuse; Cleans up the area around accidental waste spills and ensures customers containers are replaced properly.
10. May be required to work during emergency situations.

* Must have a valid driver’s license for the state in which the position works. Requires a clean driving record.

hen Nicole Reed first joined Waste Pro, the job she wanted wasn’t available – but that didn’t stop her from pushing through and reaching her goal.

Nicole joined Waste Pro in 2011 after working for more than a decade in retail. She spent five years with Sam’s Club management, but decided with two children at home, the work-life balance simply wasn’t working.

“I needed more structure, and this was much better for my family life,” Nicole said. “Having the leadership experience from that job was a huge asset when I got to Waste Pro.”

Nicole began her Waste Pro career as an inside sales representative, which she made clear during her first job interview was not the job she wanted.

“The interviewer asked what I wanted to do, and I told him I wanted to work in human resources. He told me there were no positions available, which I knew,” she said. “But he didn’t ask what job I was interviewing for, he asked what job I wanted!”

She said it was a great ice breaker and she received an offer for the inside sales position, which she took.

“Any position was a gateway to get where I wanted to be,” she said.

A year later, when an HR position opened, Nicole said she knew she wasn’t ready for it, but she applied anyway.

“I wasn’t selected but it wasn’t a disappointment for me,” she said. “I knew I wasn’t ready, but I needed to know what Waste Pro expected.”

Ultimately, she was offered the position of Office Manager, first at the Hilton Head, SC Division in 2012, then at the Concord and Charlotte South Divisions in 2015.

Throughout her career with Waste Pro, Nicole has learned the secret to success is confidence. It’s critical, she said, to have the mindset and confidence of knowing what you want and expect.

“If you have a negative mindset, you will immediately think you can’t succeed,” she said. “Stay true to yourself, know what you’re capable of, and stand your ground.”

Finally, in 2021, Nicole got the offer she’d been waiting for since 2011 – the job of Regional HR Generalist.

“I was really excited,” she said.

Nicole said she felt more ready for the job this time around because, as Office Manager, she served as a self-described “House Mother” and would help diffuse emotional situations, make sure everyone felt like they were being treated fairly, and helped perform HR functions when there was a job vacancy or a new trainee in the HR department.

In her new role, Nicole said while she does have daily tasks that she sticks to, she has learned she can’t schedule every minute of every day. She makes it a point to leave pockets of time available in case an email comes in that requires her to do research or someone comes into her office with a concern.

“I try to be the person they can come to and know they won’t be judged,” she said. “When people come to HR they’re typically already at their wit’s end. I’ll listen and give them honest feedback, and a lot of the time they walk out of the room feeling better than they did when they walked in.”

That’s part of why Nicole loves her job so much. She loves seeing other people succeed and being a part of their success – something she carries with her into her personal life as well.

“I teach Sunday school at church, which I think helps me more than the people in my class, knowing I can guide somebody toward something so meaningful,” she said.

Nicole is also an avid cook, describing cooking as her therapy. She has become something of a local celebrity for her famous collard greens and chicken and dumplings. She also has a new smoker she uses for foods like ribs, chicken, and pulled pork.

Nicole is proud to say she has been with Waste Pro for ten years – something, she says, isn’t very common in most companies.

“I’ve always had a strong leadership team with Waste Pro,” she said. “They’ve always taken pride in caring for their employees and making them feel like family, which is the same way I feel working here.”
